County approves millage rate

SPLOST VII list and library architect also approved

VALDOSTA — The intergovernmental agreement on the SPLOST (Special Option Local Sales Tax) VII referendum was officially accepted by the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners at Tuesday's meeting. The commissioners also approved the architect recommended by the  library board for the construction of the proposed new main library at Five Points.

The library board and board of commissioners selected Clemons, Rutherford and Associates to serve as the architects for the library, after vetting a list of ten firms for the     job.

With consensus reached ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s regular meeting, the library architect and SPLOST VII agreement were accepted and adopted in short order. With the biggest recipients of SPLOST VII already in agreement -- Lowndes County and the City of Valdosta -- the remaining municipalities in the county will have to agree on the tax and finalize lists of projects to be funded.

The SPLOST VII agreement was forwarded to the governments of Lake Park, Dasher, Remerton and Hahira. The county will receive 45.05 percent of the net proceeds from the tax. Valdosta will receive 49.91 percent, Hahira will receive 2.51 percent, Remerton will receive 1.03, Dasher will receive 0.83 percent and Dasher will receive 0.67 percent of the special tax.

In other business, the commissioners unanimously approved the following agenda items:

 • Adoption of a millage for the county. Just ahead of Tuesday’s regular meeting, a special session of the board was called to discuss the millage rate. As the rate of 9.56 mills is the same as last year’s rate, the special meeting was the only time the board was required by law to hold a meeting on the issue.

• Acceptance of a proposal for repair of Cat Creek Road. The board accepted Reames and Sons’ low bid of $59,640 to repair an issue on the road.

• Authorization for improvements to Cameron Lane. The board unanimously authorized the demolition of the two lane road in favor of a wider boulevard, which will serve as the primary road into a proposed industrial park off Highway 84 West.
