VALDOSTA —
Several middle school students complained of injuries Friday morning after a vehicle struck the rear of a Valdosta City School bus on Lankford Drive, according to school and police officials.
“When first responders arrived on the scene, only one child complained of injuries and was transported to South Georgia Medical Center from the scene of the accident,” said Jennifer Steedley, Valdosta City Schools public relations director. “After a new bus came and children were transported to Valdosta Middle School, about nine other children complained of injuries and were transported by our bus from the school to South Georgia Medical Center, where they were treated and released to their parents.”
Steedley said there were 39 students on the bus at the time of the accident at approximately 7:30 a.m. Friday.
Valdosta police responded to the call, regarding a city school bus being rear-ended by a 2005 Chevy Express at the corner of Lankford Drive and Roberts Street, said Valdosta Police Cmdr. Brian Childress.
The bus driver said he was traveling north on Lankford, the commander said. The bus driver stopped at the intersection, put on the bus’ lights and automated side-window stop sign when the bus was struck from behind.
The Chevy’s driver, Ronald Collins, 64, of Jakin, was cited for following too closely, Childress said. The bus driver was not cited.
Steedley said the school’s bus driver and other students returned to their normal activities following the incident.
