Lowndes High School’s Mock Trial Team finished its season with its first appearance at the state finals Saturday in Lawrenceville. The 22nd annual Georgia Mock Trial Competition was held at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.
David Kenner, senior prosecuting attorney, was awarded the Best Attorney Award in round one against Brookwood High School, as well as Best Attorney in round two against Douglas High School.
Jamie Mauldin, senior defense attorney, was awarded the Best Attorney Award in round two against semi-finalist Central High of Macon.
Sophomore Tumise Asebiomo received the Best Witness Award for her portrayal of Tere Nicky Tippy in both round one and round two while junior Brianna Turner received the Best Witness Award for her portrayal of Vivian Theodore in round two. Junior Brittany Ward received two perfect scores for her portrayal of Peyton Finnegan and the defense team received a perfect 10 in round two as well.
Lowndes High School received six of the possible eight awards given during its two rounds.
Nineteen members of this year’s Mock Trial Team will return next year. Three of them — Brianna Turner, Latifah Choice and Tieteanna Harris — will be competing for their fourth and final year.
Grady High School defeated Jonesboro High School to win the overall team competition for the second straight year and will represent the state in the National High School Mock Trial Championship to be held May 5-9 in Philadelphia, Pa.
