Man surrenders to negotiator

Stand-off ends peacefully

VALDOSTA — A law-enforcement negotiator talked a man into surrendering Wednesday morning after he had barricaded himself inside a house.

At 11:22 p.m. Tuesday, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance call in the area of Second Drive and Dogwood Drive. When deputies arrived, a white male was in his front yard, yelling and cursing at the officers, according to reports. Sheriff Chris Prine said the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“When the lieutenant arrived, he stated the man was very uncooperative with deputies and barricaded himself in his house,” Prine said. “That’s when I was called.”

The man refused to exit his house. He broke the windows out and threatened to shoot the deputies.

The Special Response Team was called to the scene. Team Cmdr. Rob Picotti started the negotiating process with the man and was able to make entry into the home, Prine said.

Picotti was able to talk the man into exiting the home at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. The man was then transported to an area hospital where he received medical attention for lacerations to his arms.

Prine commended the Special Response Team for its hard work and commitment to the job.

“These people go way beyond the call of duty to protect the citizens of our community,” he said. “I am really proud to have them on board with us.”

No charges were filed at time of this report.

The case remains under investigation.
