VALDOSTA —
Primary Day is fast approaching, as voters have until Tuesday to decide who to vote for.
Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31 as voters go to their precincts to cast their ballots. Early voting numbers indicate that just under 5,000 have already voted during the early and advance voting periods, or approximately 8 percent of the total registered voters in Lowndes County.
Several races will essentially be decided in the primary as the candidates running for office in the partisan races are running on the same party ticket, including:
• Probate Court Judge: Terri Adams, incumbent and Tina Folsom are both on the Republican party ballot;
• Clerk, Superior Court: Beth Copeland Greene, Amanda Seago O’Steen, and Tina M. Riggins are all on the Republican party ballot;
• Coroner: W.H. “Bill” Watson, incumbent, and Chris Gay are both on the Democratic ticket;
• Tax Assessor, Post 1: Doyle Kelly, incumbent, and Robert Y. (Bob) Dewar, Jr. are both on the Democratic ticket;
• County Commission Super District 5: Bill Tucker, Jody T. Hall, Adam Rassatt, and John P. Page are on the Republican ballot.
Although the results will not be final until the November general election, only one candidate will be left in each of these races.
As candidates and referendums all have to have 50 percent of the popular vote plus one in order to garner a majority win, in the races with multiple candidates, there is a higher probability of a run-off.
If there are any races without a majority winner, the Special Run-Off Election will be held in August.
All of this information and more can be found in today’s Primary Election Guide inserted into the Times with profiles of each of the candidates who responded to the questions.
