Win, lose or draw: Lowndes primary decides few races, others continue

VALDOSTA — Tuesday’s primary election unofficially decided a few Lowndes County races, while one will go on to a runoff, and others will be decided in the November general election.

The Times has projected Terri Adams, the incumbent, as the winner in the race for probate court judge, as Adams took in 61.51 percent of preliminary counts and challenger Tina Folsom received 38.49 percent of the votes.

“I’m tremendously overwhelmed and thankful,” said Adams. “This has been a short, but long race. It’s been stressful trying to run both the court and a campaign. I’ll be back at the job tomorrow, and I’ll be happy to be there.”

Beth Copeland Greene has been projected as the winner in the race for Clerk of the Superior Court of Lowndes County. Greene took in 61.06 percent of the initial count, while opponents Amanda Seago O’Steen carried 24.82 percent and Tina M. Riggins tallied 14.12 percent of the votes.

John Kent Edwards has been projected as the winner in the race for state court judge. Edwards received 65.70 percent of the preliminary tally and his opponent, Sandra K. Guest, took in 34.24 percent.

“I’m going to continue to work hard to make sure that the residents of Lowndes County stay proud of their state court,” said Edwards.

Incumbent Doyle Kelly has been projected to edge out his opponent in the race for Tax Assessor by a mere 3 percent. Kelly took in 51.68 percent of the initial count, while his opponent, Robert Y. Dewar, gathered 48.32 percent.

--Partisan races--

The incumbent coroner, W. M. Watson, has been projected to pull in 58.24 percent, while his challenger, Chris Gay, collected 41.76 percent of the votes.

John Gates’ has been projected to carry the Republican nomination for County Commission Super District 4 with 56.96 percent of the initial count, while challenger James Warren III drew in 43.04 percent of the votes.

The race for Super District 4’s Democratic nominee appears to be much closer, with opponents Demarcus A. Marshall and Allen Lane sitting just 2.02 percent apart. Preliminary counts attribute 51.01 percent of the vote to Marshall and 48.99 percent to Lane.

The race for Super District 5 will, in all likelihood, head to a run-off vote between Republican candidates, and long-time friends, Jody T. Hall and John P. Page. Contenders Adam Rassatt and Bill Tucker have been eliminated.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came out to vote tonight and remind everyone to come out to the August run-off,” said Hall. “It’s very important that you come out and support John or mysfelf.”

Page also took time to offer his thoughts on the run-off.

“I just want thank all of the people who voted for me and I appreciate all of the hard work from the volunteers,” Page. “We’ve passed the first hurdle as we head to the run-off, and I hope everyone will come back out to the run-offs.”

The Primary Run-Off election is scheduled for Aug. 21. Official counts from Tuesday’s primaries will be confirmed on Friday.
