Valdosta State University Music hosts two concerts

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University Music has two concerts scheduled for the early part of this week.

• At 7:30 p.m. today, Whitehead Auditorium, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood, guest artists flutist Sergio Barrenechea and his wife, the pianist Lucia Barrenechea, perform as the Barrenechea Duo . They are accompanied by the vocals of Daphne Gerling.

The Barrenechea Duo has been performing for the past 20 years.

“The Duo Barrenechea aims to explore a wide repertoire for flute and piano, including the promotion of Brazilian music,” says M. Brent Williams of VSU Music.

Both Barrenecheas are natives of Brazil, where they participate in many musical and academic endeavors.

For this evening’s concert, the Barrenechea Duo plans to perform Heitor Villa-Lobos’ “Hommage a Chopin” (1949); Liduino Pitombeira’s “Sertão Central, Opus 84” (2004); M. Camargo-Guarnieri’s “Saracoteio” (1978); Henrique Oswald’s “Valse, Op. 4 n. 1 Il Neige!” (1902); Andre Caplet’s “Rêverie et Petite Valse” (1905); Cecile Chaminde’s “Portrait” for voice, flute and piano, poem by Pierre Reynel; Elenice Maranesi’s “Céu de maio” (1987); Francisco Mignone’s “Aquela modinha que o Villa não escreveu” (1981), “Cucumbizinho” (1938); Rafael dos Santos’ “Tardes Goianas” (2003).

• At 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Whitehead Auditorium, VSU Fine Arts Building corner of Oak and Brookwood. VSU student Timothy Hilgert presents his recital on trombone. This concert features the music of Folke, Rabe, Gottfried Finger, Robert Suderberg, and Nino Rota.

Admission: Free and open to the public for both concerts.
