South Georgia Motorsports Park will have a wide variety of activities going on today.
SGMP is hosting the Jet Jam Night of Fire today. Car racing, drag racing, arts and crafts and fireworks are some of the things that will be going on at the Motorsports Park.
“It’s our annual fourth of July event,” SGMP general manager Tim Fleming said. “We’ve got cycles and the speedway (races) going. We’re going to have the Pro Challenge series, the race ‘em, wreck ’em deal, our hobby stock, the vintage cars. On (the drag strip) we’ve got all our classes of bikes, our heads-up cars, the pro-mods, the jet cars. We’ve got bounce houses for the kids, arts and crafts for the ladies and at like 9 p.m., we’ve got fireworks.”
General admission tickets are $15, with children 12 and under admitted free.
Spectator gates open at 2 p.m. Drag racing will take place throughout the afternoon and evening, while action at the oval track will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will last until late at night.
“It’s a lot of racing for one day,” Fleming said.
SGMP’s drag strip will host several classes of drag racing today. There will be Super Pro and Pro Bracket drag races, and jet car racing. There will also be motorcycle drag racing. Riders will compete in several different classes.
Motorcycle qualifying will be held at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Drag racers will qualify at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Motorcycle eliminations take place at 3 p.m., and drag racer eliminations will happen at 4 p.m. SGMP will hold its Heads Up Havoc series races, where several different classes of cars will have their own races. Jet car drag races will be held at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
The oval race track will host several different classes of races on Saturday evening. Saturday Night Thunder Racing Series, Pro Challenge Racing Series and race ’em, wreck ’em races will all be held on Saturday night. There will be hobby stock, thunder and lightning, E-Mods and vintage cars racing.
The gates to the race track will open for spectators at 4:30 p.m. Practice will last from 6-7:15 p.m. The heats begin at 8 p.m. After the heats, there will be a brief intermission, then the feature races will start afterwards, at about 8:30 p.m.
South Georgia Motorsports Park is located at 2521 U.S. Highway 41 North in Cecil, one mile north of Interstate 75 Exit 32. The Motorsports Park features a 1/2 mile paved oval track and a 1/4 mile all-concrete dragstrip.
