Justice Department hears school complaints

The Valdosta-Lowndes County Southern Christian Leadership Conference heard from the federal Department of Justice Sunday night on the state of the Valdosta City School System.

However, the media, and therefore the rest of the public, were not privy to what the sources discussed.

Two attorneys from the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, Educational Opportunities Section attended the meeting at Serenity Church just a day before they are scheduled to visit VCS for a walk through.

The school system is in the process of coming out from under a consent order imposed by the DOJ. The consent order was imposed more than 30 years ago on the heels of the civil rights movement.

To be released from the consent order, the school system must improve minority hiring and recruiting practices.
