VALDOSTA — Dr. William “Bill” O. Cason will lead the Valdosta City School System as superintendent for another year.
The Valdosta Board of Education voted to extend his contract at its Monday meeting. The vote was a unanimous one.
Also Monday:
• The board approved the 2010-11 Valdosta City School System calendar. The calendar features the same Christmas, Thanksgiving and Spring holiday dates as the calendar currently being proposed for the Lowndes County School System.
• Newbern Middle School will continue its Ghana exchange program. Cason asked board members to approve the special program, which has completed one exchange between local students and a school in Ghana, Africa.
• Board members listened to the first reading of a revised policy concerning board meetings. It states that the board’s work sessions will rotate between the schools, with the schedule approved each July. Regular board meetings will remain at the Central Office.
• Board members listened to the first readings of two revised policies allowing public participants to sign in at board meetings to speak. Current policy requires a person to submit a request to speak five days before the meeting. Cason said he believes this policy is a step in the right direction. Warren Lee, District 3, said the board should consider some parameters, such as limiting the time of a speaker or limiting the number of speakers to be heard at one meeting.
The Valdosta Board of Education will hold a work session at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 at the Central Office.
