VALDOSTA —
The applicant has tabled a request to close a road and the regional manager of Advanced Disposal Services apologized for a rough first week during Tuesday night's meeting of the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners.
The discussion about Old State Road, valued for its direct path into the gills of the Alapaha River, will be tabled until the next session of the county board. Commissioners concluded on Jan. 22 that public use of Old State Road had slowed to the point that it was now more feasible to abandon the .17 mile boat ramp than maintain it.
A representative from Advanced Disposal used Tuesday evening’s forum to apologize for week one kinks that county customers have been experiencing as the waste management company starts to fulfill its contract. Advanced Disposal’s seven permanent employees and four temps fielded 400 phone calls after taking more than 800 on average each day of the first week.
The company has agreed to accept glass along with the rest of client recyclables, though the brittle silica cheapens the resale value when mixed with other reusable goods, reasoned the representative. "We are a county partner and we’re here for the long run," he reasoned, further stating that the company will right all wrongs and make good on the quality of service the county signed up for.
For those citizens still without a collection cart, Advanced Disposal will reportedly collect roadside material from customers. County residents may also stop by to pick up a cart in person at Advanced Disposal’s Valdosta office, located at 1101 Hawkings Street.
In other county business, commissioners approved the following agenda items:
• Nick Hinson, of Wild Adventures, was appointed to the Keep Lowndes/Valdosta Beautiful board.
•A public hearing was held on the conversion of a parcel of land, between US Highway 41 and Newsome Road, from estate agricultural to highway commercial. An owner stated his intent to promote highway tourism in the area.
• A public hearing was held concerning a parcel of land at the intersection of Barrentine and Davis Road and the property's conversion from highway commercial to low density residential.
•A public hearing was held on an Interstate land Management, LLC property near the intersection of Briarwood Road and Interstate 75 with regard to the parcel's conversion from low density residential to highway commercial.
•Renewal of the Piney Woods Saddle Club’s lease agreement with the county was considered.
•The contract concerning the rural transportation program was considered.
• Commissioners considered the creation of a new mutual aid agreement and resolution between Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, after South Carolina's Supreme Court mandated that the resolution be drafted in writing.
•Commissioners considered amending eligibility rules for the GEBCORP’s (Government Employee Benefits Corporation) Defined Benefit Retirement Plan for two employees from the Tax Commissioner's office.
