VALDOSTA —
Valdosta police said Friday that charges are “doubtful” in a series of late April Valdosta State University fraternity incidents that left one person with an ear partially bitten off.
Valdosta police took the case to the Southern District Attorney’s office for review. Based on discrepancies in witness stories — including discrepancies from the person who had a small portion of his ear bitten off, lack of cooperation from victims, etc., “at this point, charges are doubtful,” Valdosta Police Cmdr. Brian Childress said Friday.
The incidents involved two rival fraternities during the weekend of April 28-29. Valdosta police were called to the Baytree Road locations of the neighboring Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Pi Kappa Phi on three separate occasions.
A follow-up to one incident also had police answering a call at South Georgia Medical Center where one person was being treated for a tooth going through his cheek as a result of a punch to his face.
The initial reports involved a dispute between the two fraternities.
A second call involved loud music and 10-15 reportedly people assaulting one person on the SAE front lawn, which led to a person brandishing an unloaded firearm — no one identified anyone as the attackers to police. The third call dealt with a man’s ear being partially bitten off.
Earlier this week, VSU officials said the university’s investigation continues.
University officials interviewed students and are working with the national offices of both fraternities regarding the incidents.
