VALDOSTA —
Valdosta State University Art’s ceramics program continues its guest artist program this week by hosting Julie Guyot.
Guyot is a Florida State University adjunct instructor. She earned a bachelor of fine arts in ceramics from Southern Illinois University and a master’s in studio art from FSU.
She works from her backyard studio, firing her ceramics in the kiln on her screened porch.
“My current work examines my family’s history through photographs and ephemera both found from outside sources and acquired from my family,” Guyot says of her more recent ceramics. “Using this imagery allows me to create my own narrative of a time and place and people that I know very little about. Blending my world, growing up in the 1970s and 1980s with my grandparents’ world of the 1930s and 1940s, I can create a nostalgia for something that never really existed.”
VSU Ceramics has hosted numerous guest artists during the past several years. These visits are funded by faculty and student ceramics artists hosting annual Mother’s Day and holiday sales.
Guyot conducts a two-day workshop, 1-4:30 p.m. today and Thursday, Ceramics Studio, Room 136, VSU Fine Arts Building, corner of Oak and Brookwood. At 6:30 p.m. today, she will discuss her work in Room 2004, VSU University Center; free and open to the public.
