VALDOSTA — Members of the Deep South Regional Municipal Solid Waste Management Authority will receive a check in the coming weeks for their involvement with the organization.
At Wednesday’s meeting, the authority heard a variety of proposals on how to disburse its current fund balance.
The purpose of the disbursement is to provide members with financial assistance in sustaining, as well as enhancing, existing solid waste management programs.
Members of the authority are Berrien County, Nashville, Lanier County, Lakeland, Lowndes County and Valdosta.
The current fund balance is more than $890,000. The authority will disburse 66.7 percent of the fund balance to the authority members using a weighted formula.
Richard Lee, representing Lowndes County, said the money will serve as a one time “shot in the arm” for members to help fund solid waste management activities.
Larry Hanson, at-large representative, suggested that members from the board go to a monthly meeting for each government and present the check.
Elna Bragdon requested that a check presentation made in Berrien County include information on the purpose of the funds and the authority.
The funds will have to be used by Dec. 31, 2010, and government entities will be allowed to be reimbursed for funds already spent in this fiscal year.
A different revenue sharing program will be put in place to divide up other funds in upcoming years.
In the proposals, designed by Kevin Beals, development reviewer for Lowndes County, a membership level was also discussed to bring in other government entities in the future.
The proposal suggests that other government entities brought in should not have voting privileges on the authority but should be eligible for the revenue sharing program.
Authority Attorney Tommy Coleman said a membership option is possible, but if other government entities are brought in, per statute, they may be required to give them voting privileges.
Coleman said he would look into the possibility.
