County meeting over in a flash

LOWNDES COUNTY — The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners dispatched with the people’s business at a lightning speed of 9 minutes Tuesday evening.

The four items on the agenda were all passed unanimously with little discussion and no citizens stepped forward to be heard.

The meeting opened with an acknowledgment of the county’s first two graduates from the Georgia Fire Academy Firefighter I course, Lance Jenkins, who was one of the top students to graduate in his class, and Will McPherson. Fire Chief Richard Guyton said Jenkins is assigned to the Southside station and McPherson is assigned to the Westside station.

County Commissioners approved the grant re-application for 2010 to keep the MIDS bus system running; seven text amendments to the Unified Land Development Code; and approved for Lakewood Country Estates on Swan Drive to be named a Standard Special Tax Lighting District.

In addition, commissioners unanimously approved a request by Bob Dewar to rezone property off Clyattstone Road in the county to more restrictive zoning, from R-1 to E-A and R-A.

The request was recommended for denial by the county zoning administrator but the Planning Commission recommended approval at a recent meeting.

Commissioners also voted to have a public hearing to determine the future of Haunted House Road in Lake Park. The road is less than a tenth of a mile and serves only as a cut through. There has been a request from Cowart & Cowart Development Company for the county to abandon the road in order to make way for a commercial development.

The meeting adjourned with no further discussion of the issue concerning the permit fees for PCA. County Manager Joe Pritchard stated that there was no reason to discuss the issue further from the county’s standpoint.
