Echols County hosts all-school reunion

The Valdosta Daily Times

Statenville — The Sixth Biennial Echols County Schools Reunion is scheduled for this weekend.  If you attended, worked at, or sent your children to any Echols County school, you are invited.

Registration begins 9 a.m. Saturday in the school cafeteria and will be ongoing. There will be an hour-long program in the auditorium. The topic for the program will be Celebrating Echols Education Heritage where teachers and administrators (past and present) will be recognized.

There will be a roll call of classes from 1934-2010. Opportunity will be given to attendees to pay a brief tribute to a teacher or administrator if  they would like.  Immediately after the program will be lunch, visiting, and browsing the displays until 1 p.m., when school tours begin.

Visitors will be able to tour the new pre-K through 8 building, where those grades will be housed this fall, as well as the new gym, library, and cafeteria. And for those who wish, the old buildings may also be visited.

At 3 p.m., there will be a brief grand finale in the gym where participants will sing the school alma mater — probably for the last time in this gym. At this time, organizers will recognize coaches and players from the ’60s and early ’70s. Coaches Kyle Holiday, Jackie Carter, and Bobby Ritch will be on hand to greet their players. Organizers have received confirmation from former home-economics teacher Barbara Dillard Holiday that she will be present.

Lunch may be purchased on site or participants may bring their own. Make plans to eat with your classmates and friends in the cafeteria, which will be serving a different purpose next year. Bring old pictures, yearbooks, etc., to share and remember when, says organizer Mamie Pipkins.

“We extend an invitation to all current and former teachers and administrators as well as students to come join us that day for a day of fun and visiting,” Pipkins said. “And we ask for your help to get the word out to your classmates, family and friends.”
