VALDOSTA —
For more than 55 years, the people of South Georgia have taken part in the annual Bird Supper in Atlanta to meet with legislators and make their priorities heard.
Tickets for the traditional quail and grits dinner are on sale for $50 each, and the Friday deadline to purchase them is quickly approaching. The dinner will be held Feb. 27 at the Georgia Railroad Depot across the street from the state capitol.
The dinner is open to the public, but Valdosta and Lowndes County professionals who have a stake in the political decisions during the Georgia General Assembly will get the most out of the dinner, according to City Public Information Officer Sementha Mathews.
In a relaxed setting, the dinner offers a chance for South Georgia locals to sit down with legislators, meet them face-to-face, engage them in conversation, and make needs and priorities clear.
The dinner starts at 5 p.m. and usually ends around 7 p.m., but guests who arrive early will likely have a chance to attend other meetings during the day before the meal. Tickets are available at Valdosta City Hall, 216 East
Central Avenue, and the first floor of the Lowndes County Judicial-Administrative Complex, 327 North Ashley Street.
More than 200 have RSVP'ed to the supper so far, and the City expects at least 350 by the end of the week. About 150 legislators have turned in RSVPs and about 85 Valdosta area citizens plan to attend as of Tuesday afternoon.
"The dinner helps remind legislators that we're down here, and that we're an integral part of what's going on in the state," Mathews said. "This is something the delegation enjoys and looks forward to. They have probably been talking about this for months."
