VALDOSTA —
The worst of the heat wave should be over today, with temperatures in South Georgia easing a bit later in the week, according to a weather service forecaster.
Valdosta hit 99 degrees Sunday, said Parks Camp, meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Tallahassee, Fla., office.
Heat indices — which take into account humidity as well as other factors — for Valdosta climbed as high as 116 degrees Sunday, he said.
Today, the Valdosta forecast calls for a high around 97 degrees. Camp said the heat indices could reach as high as 110 in areas around the city.
Starting Tuesday, the high pressure system dominating the Southeast should start to break up, and temperatures should ease by a few degrees into the mid-90s, he said.
“The normals for Valdosta at this time should be around 91 or 92,” he said.
The heat indices are being driven up by unusually high humidity, Camp said.
While Valdosta hasn’t officially broken any records, cities farther north in Georgia have been seeing temperatures well past the century mark. Albany hit 104 degrees Sunday, breaking the old record for that date of 101 set in 1990, Camp said. Macon hit 108 degrees Sunday.
“Central Georgia is getting it pretty bad,” he said.
