Lowndes County welcomes new 4-H agent

VALDOSTA — The Lowndes County 4-H Extension Office welcomed new 4-H Agent Laura Walton a few weeks ago on January 2, and she couldn't be happier.

“Lowndes County already has a great 4-H program...with a lot of great ideas. I just want to build on them,” said Walton.

Growing up in Cherokee County just north of Atlanta, Walton has been involved in 4-H since the 5th grade. A friend was on the Poultry Judging team and invited Walton to join.

“I really enjoyed it,” said Walton. “I had never found my niche in school, and 4-H gave me that.”

Walton went on to be involved in 4-H throughout high school and college, getting involved in leadership, community service, consumer judging and public speaking. She graduated last fall with a Bachelors of Science in Human Development and Family Sciences. Now, she wants to help kids find their niche with 4-H.

“If you're interested in something, 4-H most likely has that. We're a diverse program,” said Walton. “We have a lot of flexibility and can base programs on the needs of kids.”

The Extension Office has a lot of events and activities planned for the year, including the upcoming Random Kindness Day, where 4-H members will write letters to their adopted Air Force members, visit Lake Haven Nursing Home, and leave little notes of inspiration sprinkled throughout the community, among other things.

The Extension Office is also planning numerous spring break events and summer camps, ranging from just giving kids a chance to relax to the local award-winning Archery and Shotgunning teams preparing for competition.

Parents and kids who are interested in learning more about what the 4-H has to offer should give the Extension office a call at (229) 333-5185.

“People tend to think of the 4-H as just an agricultural thing. That's important, but we have many more programs going on,” said Walton.
