VALDOSTA —
With the primary election officially a week away, Lowndes County voters continue taking advantage of early voting.
Tiffany Linkswiler of the Lowndes County Board of Elections said that voter turnout so far has exceeded the year-to-date total of the last general election.
There were 59 votes cast for Republican candidates, 33 for Democrats and one ballot submitted in favor of a non-partisan candidate on July 21.
Saturday’s ballots bring the running total of advance votes to 1,840 Republican votes, 739 Democratic nods, and 47 tickets in favor of non-partisan candidates.
Linkswiler said both the Democrat and Republican parties are offering free transport out to the polls, be she couldn’t say for sure how popular the service has been this year.
“Each party has left phone numbers with our office so that citizens can get a ride with their party of choice,” said Linkswiler. “I’m not sure how many people are taking advantage of the service this year, but it has been well used in the past.”
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day through Friday, July 27. The primary election day is Tuesday, July 31, at area polling places.
A picture ID is required during voting. A driver’s license or any government-funded organization picture ID is accepted when voting. Identification from a private business or school is not accepted. If a citizen does not have a picture ID when attempting to vote, a free ID can be made at the Board of Elections Office on the spot.
Early voting ballots may be cast at the Elections Office, 2808 N. Oak St., Valdosta. For a free ride, call the Elections Office at (229) 671-2850.
