VALDOSTA —
Two candidates face off today to become Lowndes County’s first Super District 5 commissioner.
Republican candidates Jody T. Hall and John P. Page are the lone candidates in today’s runoff.
In the July 31 primary, four GOP contenders vied for the new commission seat. Hall received 2,191 votes or 38.43 percent to Page’s 2,095 votes, or 36.75 percent. Candidates Bill Tucker received 19.54 percent and Adam Rassatt garnered 5.28 percent.
With none of the Super District 5 candidates receiving the necessary 50 percent plus one vote to win the race, the two top contenders, Hall and Page, moved onto today’s runoff race.
Though part of the primary, the runoff will decide who will be the first Super District 5 Lowndes County commissioner. This seat is part of the new expanded Lowndes County Commission which changes the county’s governing body from the format of three commissioners and a chairman to five commissioners and a chairman.
With no Democrat contenders for District 5, the runoff will decide if Hall or Page will be the first to sit in the new seat; however, the winner will not take office until early January 2013.
GOP candidate John Gates and Democrat Demarcus A. Marshall will face off in November to decide who will be the first Super District 4 Lowndes County commissioner.
Last week, advanced voting ended for the runoff, with a total of 588 votes cast. These will be added to the tallies at the end of today’s totals.
Voters who voted the Republican ticket in the primary as well as registered voters who did not vote in the primary, who live in Super District 5, are eligible to cast a ballot in today’s runoff.
