Youngsters needed for musical ‘The Boy Friend’

VALDOSTA — South Georgia Council for Youth in the Performing Arts hosts auditions this weekend for its fall musical.

SGCYPA will present “The Boy Friend” later this year. This Sandy Wilson comedy musical is set on the French Riviera during the Roaring ’20s. In many ways, this show is a parody of 1920s-era Rodgers and Hart musicals.

“The Boy Friend” has opportunities for male and female youths who sing, act and dance, says Sandy Trowell with SGCYPA. The show also has backstage and technical spots for youths.

Those auditioning for a role are asked to learn a short monologue and sing a song. Audition monologues and songs can be found on the organization’s website http://sgcyoutharts.org.

Youngsters uncomfortable with singing alone can audition as part of an ensemble.

Auditioning youngsters and youths are also asked to wear appropriate dress and shoes. They will be learning a short dance number during the audition.

Following the first session, the organization will call back participants for additional auditions.

A $75 production fee is required after the cast is selected. This cost helps pay for the rights and licensing of the show, rental fees, costumes, a T-shirt, and as a deposit on the script. Fifteen dollars of the fee is rebated if the script is returned in good condition.

“The Boy Friend” performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Nov. 13; 3 p.m., Nov. 14, Valdosta High School Performing Arts Center.

Audition is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, First Christian Church, 1905 N. Patterson St. Callbacks will be held 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, and 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19.
