LAKELAND — With bow hunting season just days away, Lanier County is hosting a Bow Hunters Seminar Saturday on the grounds of the Jim & Mary Threatte Arts & Civic Center.
Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the six hours of instruction kick off at 9 a.m.
The Bow Hunters Seminar is open to children 10 years of age and older, as well as adults, according to a press release. Participants between the ages of 10 and 15 must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $5 and includes lunch.
“The primary focus of the Bow Hunters Seminar is the instruction and promotion of bow hunting archery skills,” Zellna Shaw, events coordinator for the Jim & Mary Threatte Arts & Civic Center, said. “This seminar will provide instruction on proper archery techniques, conservation and preservation of wildlife and natural resources, safety and basic in-field first aid.”
Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and some archery equipment of their choosing to the event. Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the seminar, Shaw said.
“Having a seminar in Lakeland is an effort to lay the groundwork for an annual week-long archery camp beginning in June of 2010,” Shaw added.
Pre-registration for the Bow Hunters Seminar can be completed by visiting the Lakeland-Lanier County Chamber of Commerce from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It can also be completed by sending the participant’s name, address, phone number and age, along with a check or money, to the Jim & Mary Threatte Arts & Civic Center, P.O. Box 247, Lakeland, Ga., 31635.
Sponsors of the Bow Hunters Seminar include the Lakeland-Nashville Chapter of the Georgia Hunting & Fishing Federation, the Lakeland-Lanier County Chamber of Commerce and Dennis and Angela Lewis of Southland Woods & Water Television.
To learn more, please call Zellna Shaw at (229) 482-1184.
Bow season kicks off Saturday, Sept. 12 statewide, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division.
Limits:
Twelve deer per season statewide. No more than 10 may be antlerless and no more than two may be antlered. One of the two antlered deer must have at least four points, one inch or longer, on one side of the antlers.
