VALDOSTA — A man was arrested and charged in the murder of a 2-year-old child Tuesday.
Around 5 p.m., Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested Brandon Lee Thompson, 29, on charges of felony murder and felony cruelty to children for his alleged involvement in the death of his girlfriend’s daughter, Abriana Thomas, said Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine. On Tuesday, Sept. 29, emergency medical services was dispatched to 5200 Sequani Circle in Lake Park to find Thomas unresponsive, according to a press release from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
The child was initially transported to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment. She was then transported to Shand’s Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., by an area Life Flight program. Thomas succumbed to injuries the next day. A subsequent autopsy performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta determined that the child died of blunt force trauma.
An investigation into Thomas’ death led to Thompson’s arrest.
No charges have been filed against the victim’s mother, who has two other daughters, Prine said. However, her children, as well as Thompson’s two sons, have been turned over to the Division of Family and Children Services, Prine said.
“We have been working on this case non-stop since last week,” Prine said. “I am proud of the detectives for their hard work.”
