The Valdosta Daily Times — VALDOSTA — A mid-morning wreck claimed the life of a Lowndes County man Wednesday.
According to some preliminary reports, 56-year-old Hoke Vaughn was heading east in his full-size pickup truck on McMillan Road, roughly one mile west of Staten Road, when he ran off the road and hit a tree without braking or attempting to stop.
Lowndes County Fire/Rescue were dispatched to the scene of the accident around 10:56 a.m., and firefighters extricated Vaughn from the truck.
Vaughn was then transported to South Georgia Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:45 p.m.
Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson said that it is uncertain what caused Vaughn to wreck.
“He was on a straight road,” Watson said. “The car just drifted over across the center line of the road, into a ditch and then struck a tree. He was the only occupant in the vehicle. He did not appear to have any complications with his health that might contribute to the wreck.”
The Georgia State Patrol trooper who worked the accident could not be reached by press time for additional information.
Vaughn was reportedly owner of Vaughn Battery & Alternator Inc., located at 1042 Howell Road.
