Fire destroys family’s home in Berrien County

Mother, five kids lose everything in Tuesday blaze

RAY CITY — A Tuesday mid-morning blaze has left a Ray City family burned out.

Around 11 a.m., Ray City volunteer firefighters were dispatched to a mobile home on Frank Road, located outside of the Ray city limits, to find the home in flames. Firefighters remained on the scene combating the fire until approximately 1:46 p.m., said Ray City Fire Chief Bob Mikell.

Mikell said that one bedroom was completely destroyed and the remainder of the home sustained major heat and smoke damage. He confirmed that the fire was accidentally started in the bedroom by a 5-year-old child. The blaze has been ruled unintentional, Mikell said.

The mobile home was occupied by 24-year-old Christian York and her five children, ages 6 years old or younger. One of her children has epilepsy, York’s mother, Shari Higgins, said. The fire has left York and her family displaced.

The Tifton Chapter of the Red Cross provided York and her family with a room at Nashville Inn for three days, and a church in Ray City has given them clothes and a box of food to last for a few days. However, the family is still in need of help. To provide assistance for the family or to obtain additional information about the incident, please call (229) 247-8959.
