Murder trial continued
March 26 shooting death case to be heard in June
LAKELAND — A continuance has been granted in the murder trial against Darryl Bernard Scott Jr.
The trial was originally set to begin this week.
However, the public defender assigned to Scott’s case requested that the case be continued until June, said Alapaha District Attorney Cathy Helms.
Scott, 24, is charged with malice murder in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Robert Austin Croft in Lakeland.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. Thursday, March 26.
At 10:21 p.m., Lakeland police officers and emergency medical services personnel were dispatched to Talley Avenue where they found a white male wounded from a gunshot, Lakeland Police Chief Robbie Grantham previously told The Times. The victim was transported to Louis Smith Memorial Hospital in Lakeland, where he died, Grantham said.
Lanier County Coroner Patches Phillips said that Croft was shot in the chest area.
Grantham said it appeared the incident occurred on the corner of 8th Street and Talley Avenue.
“He made it to a residence about a half a block down Talley where he knocked on the door,” Grantham said. “It appears that, when he saw no one was home, he made it back to the middle of the highway, which is where we found him wounded.”
Scott was arrested and taken to Lowndes County Jail following the shooting for unrelated charges. Grantham said the murder warrant was issued after authorities obtained enough evidence to charge Scott. Scott was also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to reports.
The suspect is originally from Chicago, Grantham added.
