Hahira to celebrate the magic of the season with festival, parade
HAHIRA — Knowing that Christmas is both a time for giving and receiving, the city of Hahira invites everyone to Give Back this holiday season.
The annual Hahira Christmas Festival and Parade will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the downtown area. Attendees are encouraged to Give Back to those who are less fortunate by bringing a nonperishable food item or monetary donation for the Hahira Food Bank, noted Emily Grace Newkirk, downtown development coordinator, in a release.
All food items and monies should be dropped off at the Donation Station, located at the popular Red Caboose on Main Street. Some citizens have, added Newkirk, chosen to Give Back in another way — by thanking and honoring veterans, as well as active duty military members, for their service to the U.S.
Beginning at 10 a.m., Hahira businesses and over 40 street vendors will sell everything from toys to jewelry to baked goods, handmade crafts, honey, and pecans to furniture, candles, gifts, knives and accessories to funnel cakes, barbecue, nachos, hot cocoa, lemonade, and Christmas crafts. Little ones can enjoy pony rides, mini train rides, and Dakota the Dog. There will be carriage rides for the whole family.
Newkirk said that Boggs Music Hall piano students will perform holiday favorites and more near both Commercial and Citizens Community banks along Main Street throughout the day. Many downtown businesses will offer specials, drawings, as well as discounts, throughout the day.
At 5 p.m., the Hahira Christmas parade will kick off at Hahira Middle School — lead by various city officials.
Making its way along South Church Street and Main Street, the parade will feature Lowndes High School’s Georgia Bridgemen and ROTC Colorguard, Hahira Middle School, the Moody Air Force Base mini jet, Valdosta Technical College, Hahira First Baptist Church, Hahira Head Start, Hahira’s Honey Bee Queen, the Valdosta Fire Department Bagpipe group, and representatives of Downtown Hahira businesses. The parade will also feature classic cars and horses, Newkirk said.
Following the parade, city officials will recognize the honorees in Hahira's Buy-a-Bulb Program — an initiative that encouraged citizens to purchase one or more bulbs on the Christmas tree in honor or in memory of loved ones, Newkirk said.
Santa Claus, who will be featured in the parade as always, will take a few minutes to pose for pictures at the Red Caboose on Main Street next to the city Christmas tree, which was provided by Hambricks Tree Farm. Parents need to bring cameras for the free photo opportunity, Newkirk said.
