VALDOSTA — Two people were arrested at Valdosta State Prison Saturday after an 84-year-old woman reportedly tried to pass drugs to an inmate.
Around 10:25 a.m., the grandmother and sister of an inmate arrived at the prison to visit the inmate, said Peggy Chapman from the Georgia Department of Corrections Public Affairs Office.
At approximately 2 p.m., the grandmother was allegedly discovered trying to give the inmate some drugs through a balloon, Chapman added.
“After learning that the two visitors were trying to introduce contraband on the premises, we notified the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office,” said Valdosta State Prison Warden William Danforth. “The sheriff’s office responded and arrested the individuals.”
Ruth Bell Waters Carter, 84, and Kimberly Dawn Jones, 28, are charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and going inside guard lines with weapons, liquor or drugs, Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine said.
The inmate’s name was not released.
