VALDOSTA — The Valdosta-Lowndes County Conference Center and Tourism Authority officially welcomed its new executive director, Tim Mabe, during the monthly board meeting Tuesday.
Before introducing Mabe, Authority Chairman Rob Evans thanked Interim Executive Director Mary Culbreth for stepping in and fulfilling leadership duties upon Donald Poor’s resignation. Evans then expressed special thanks to the committee assigned to select the new executive director.
Mabe said that although he was relocating from Texas, he feels like he is coming home.
“My wife and I did our time in Texas,” Mabe said. “But we raised three boys right here in Georgia, so this is a homecoming for us. We are both extremely excited about coming back home to Georgia and being a part of the Valdosta-Lowndes County community. We are also excited to be close to our family once again.”
The authority selected Mabe after two months of reviewing more than 50 viable applicants. Mabe was interviewed on Oct. 7, along with four other candidates for the position.
He was chosen as a finalist and unanimously approved as the new director during the Oct. 28 authority meeting.
He officially began his duties Monday, Dec. 7.
Mabe received a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences Degree in Management and Public Administration and a Master of Business Administration Degree in Marketing and Finance from Texas A & M University.
Since 1982, Mabe has directed and managed five convention and special events centers.
He has most recently served as general manager for the Special Events Center in Garland since January 2005. The facility in Garland holds Meeting Professional International's "Facility of The Year Award" for the entire Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“This award goes to the facility where the staff provides the highest level of customer service in comparison to other facilities in the same market,” Mabe said. “Needless to say I am very proud of the staff at the Special Events Center in Garland for doing such a great job with that. After meeting the staff at the Conference Center in Valdosta I realized I am blessed once again to have people that have that special talent and acumen it takes to provide that kind of service.”
Mabe is designated as a certified facilities executive and certified meeting professional and holds a global certification in strategic planning and management.
Mabe is married to Debbie Mabe and the couple shares three sons, Jimmie, Nick and Steven. They also have one grandson, Asher, and are expecting a granddaughter, Zoe, in February.
Following the meeting, the Authority was joined by staff, local elected officials and other dignitaries for the conference center’s annual Christmas Party.
The next board meeting will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at 8 a.m.
