VALDOSTA — Based on a forecasted continuance of extreme temperatures for the Lowndes County area, the severe weather shelter located at Mathis City Auditorium will remain open until Sunday.
The shelter will be open from 6 p.m.-10 a.m.
Additional information regarding extended dates and times for shelter operations will be released as soon as it becomes available.
Those needing shelter services are asked to bring the following, as applicable: Clothing, bedding, personal hygiene items, medications, baby supplies and quiet toys for small children. Shelter attendees are asked to take a bath and eat before leaving home, register immediately upon entering the shelter, obey all shelter rules and keep the building safe and sanitary. Pets, alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs and weapons are not allowed.
Lowndes County Emergency Management has arranged free transportation from the Valdosta Soup Kitchen, 601 N. Lee St., to the shelter. Buses will be available at 6 p.m. to transport shelter attendees to Mathis City Auditorium. Buses will return to Mathis City Auditorium at 10 a.m. for pickup and return to the Soup Kitchen location.
Due to extreme conditions, citizens are encouraged to take advantage of the shelter opportunity.
