Auto theft break-ins: Teen arrested

VALDOSTA — Police arrested a Valdosta teenager Wednesday after receiving an anonymous tip that he was involved in a series of thefts.

Houston Eugene Whitfield, 17, was arrested after a search of the suspect’s residence turned up stolen property from a recent string of vehicle break-ins, according to reports.

The Valdosta Police Department’s Investigations Division received an anonymous tip and searched the suspect’s residence. During the investigation, detectives found stolen property and a firearm with an altered serial number, reports stated.

The suspect was arrested and charged with felony possession of a firearm with an altered serial number and four felony counts of entering an auto to commit a theft, according to reports.

The suspect was taken to the Valdosta Police Department for questioning then transported to the Lowndes County Jail.

Detectives are still investigating other crimes in the area to determine if the suspect was involved. Additional charges may follow.

The four thefts from vehicles occurred over the past month in the areas of Bunche Drive and Bethune Street.
