Run to benefit Partnership Cancer Fund

VALDOSTA — Area folks can help people battling cancer during this weekend’s Inaugural Partnership Cancer Fund Run.

The run will benefit the Partnership Cancer Fund.

The fund does not go to pay doctors or hospital bills. What the Partnership Cancer Fund does is help pay for some of the other expenses which cancer patients or their families face during the period of treatment. Such expenses could include the co-payment of medication which is outside of the regular cancer treatment; supplement income lost through unemployment caused by cancer treatment; or pay for the costs of trips necessary for treatment in other towns.

Requirements for receiving Partnership Cancer Fund grants are:

— Be a Lowndes County resident or currently treated for cancer in Lowndes County.

— Currently undergoing treatment for cancer; a patient is still eligible if a Lowndes County resident and undergoing treatment elsewhere.

— Household must be at or below 300 percent of federal poverty level; even people who normally earn a good living can be thrust into the poverty level by lost employment due to cancer treatments.

The fund receives no governmental support, and its administrative costs are mandated to be less than 10 percent. The staff is an all-volunteer one. All applications are reviewed by a committee and unanimous approval is required.

The run will help fund this program.

The Partnership Cancer Fund Run & Fun Run/Walk begins with 7 a.m. registration, McKey Park, with the 5K race starting at 8 a.m., and the fun run/walk starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. 5K registration through Friday: $20; day-of-race registration: $25. Fun Run/Walk Registration: $15. More information: Call Get Active Running and More: (229) 219-0010; or visit www.getactivevaldosta.com
