VALDOSTA —
Cured hams flew off of the auction tables yesterday afternoon at the Lowndes County Civic Center and the subsequent egg sale was over in mere minutes as the 63rd annual Ham & Eggs Show concluded day two and came to a close.
The Valdosta Electric Company bought grand champion Joshua Dawson's 15 pound ham for $27 a pound and at a total cost of $405; the Cass Burch Automotive Group purchased reserve champion John Miles' 15 pound ham for $18 a pound and a net total of $306; and the Marble Slab Creamery acquired Diamond Wallace's $18 pound ham for $18 a pound and a net cost of $288. Eggs were sold for $10 a dozen.
Lila Owens, a Valdostan by birth, now resides in the great city of Albany, but said she and her husband returns to Titletown each year to participate in the Ham & Eggs Show.
“I grew up with the ham and eggs show, so I come back yearly to support the program,” said Owens. “This year, we got to buy a ham to share with our family. It'll be a great breakfast treat to go along with some homemade biscuits, grits and red-eye gravy.”
While the show ended Wednesday with the closing of the ham and eggs sales, a “Buyer's Breakfast” has been scheduled for 7 a.m. today, according to extension office officials.
“It was another successful show and I want to thank all of the new buyers, as well as those who have been supporting the show for decades,” said extension office agent Jake Price.
The 63rd annual Ham & Eggs Show was sponsored by the Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber of Commerce, the Lowndes County Improvement Association, the Lowndes County Farm Bureau, the Lowndes County Extension office, the Fort Valley State University Extension office and the University of Georgia Extension office.
