VALDOSTA — 1. Members of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority approved the facility committee’s request to house equipment at the Lowndes County Public Works Department. The agricultural shelter will hold mowing equipment, Michael McDowell, committee chairman, said, and the property will be secured by a chain link fence. Bids should be requested in September.
2. The board approved Lowndes County’s request for an environmental easement at Langdale Park. The county wants to take the lots out of the environmental easement. Under the agreement, the county cannot build any structures on the lots, which must remain a nature facility. The lots requested are wetlands and will go under the county’s deed, resulting in a conservation easement over the property, Gary Moser, county attorney, said.
3. Executive Director Eric Hahn gave a presentation on the progress being made at various facilities. The Freedom Park project is complete and a ribbon cutting will take place Friday, Oct. 1. Surfacing of the tennis center is finished and only needs lines painted on the court. A ribbon cutting will take place Friday, Oct. 8. The soccer complex on Forrest Street received a final walk through and a ribbon cutting will be held Friday, Oct. 29.
4. During a general discussion, J.C. Cunningham, board member, said he wants the board to discuss the process of accepting bids. The board should be able to accept or reject requests as it determines to be necessary, he said. Cunningham suggested the members present their ideas to the board on how to handle the issue at a future meeting. Moser said that the board has the authority to accept or reject property requests based on the enabling act.
