VALDOSTA —
A woman perished and two other people were seriously injured Monday afternoon after an accident near the intersection of Otter Creek Road and Howell Road sent a car and a truck plunging into Grand Bay Creek, said Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Victor Mobley.
Carrin Rebecca Meadows, 40, passed away due to injuries she sustained during the accident on Howell Road, said Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson, who cited blunt-force trauma as the cause of death.
The pickup truck was traveling down Howell Road, with a trailer and lawn mower in tow.
The pickup truck hit Meadows’ car squarely on its left side as she attempted to turn left onto Howell Road from Otter Creek Road, according to Mobley. The impact sent both vehicles over the un-guarded ravine and into Grand Bay Creek below, he said.
The driver of the pickup truck was allegedly responsive after the accident and stated that he didn’t have enough time to stop when Meadows pulled out onto the road, according to Mobley. Authorities did not identify the truck driver Monday.
All parties were transported to South Georgia Medical Center for observation, said Mobley, but attempts to resuscitate Meadows were unsuccessful.
A dive team from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to retrieve evidence from the creek, said Sheriff Chris Prine. Once the items have been retrieved, Prine said the Georgia State Patrol would reconstruct the accident.
Meadows’ husband had been notified, the coroner said.
The GSP trooper said the incident is under investigation.
