Echols County teacher arrested for marijuana possession

STATENVILLE — Echols County High School Spanish teacher Krystal Maldonado-Alers  was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of a drug related object Friday after police confiscated marijuana from her car and a glass, smoking pipe that she attempted to discard on school property.

According to Echols County Sheriff's Department investigator Will Neel, the Sheriff's Department conducts a yearly search using drug K-9's at all Echols County schools per request of the school system.

At approximately 9 a.m. on Friday, all staff, faculty and students were notified that they were on lock down and were not permitted to leave their offices or classrooms.

“The principal saw her retrieve something from her car,” said Echols County Sheriff Randy Courson.

Echols County School system principal Dave Rosser saw Maldonado-Alers retrieve what was found to be a glass, smoking pipe from her car and throw it into a fenced area around the school.

Rosser notified authorities and the pipe was retrieved and found to contain a small quantity of

marijuana residue.

Maldonado-Alers granted the authorities permission to search her car and according to Courson, less than one ounce of marijuana was retrieved from inside the car.

Maldonado-Alers was taken into custody and charged with two misdemeanors and bonded out later that day.

“She was placed on administrative leave Friday after the incident,” said superintendent of Echols County Schools Tim Ragan.

According to Ragan, the Echols County board of education will be meeting Tuesday evening to determine how they will handle the situation.
