A year ago, Parker entered Lowndes’ preseason game against Thomas County Central fighting for the starting quarterback job as a junior. The task was tough. He’d be trying to replace a two-year starter and a senior in Khary Franklin. -

Leos Jelinek is trying to bring the sport he loves into the spotlight in Winnersville.
Jelinek, who was the No. 1 doubles player in Division II at one point in his Valdosta State tennis career, is embarking on a new challenge of bringing tennis to people of all ages in the local area. -
100 Black Men of Valdosta co-sponsoring Rumble in the Swamp
An old Georgia college football rivalry will be renewed this season in Waycross.
Albany State and Savannah State are scheduled to play in the Rumble in the Swamp on Sept. 25. The game, which used to be known as the Music City Classic, will be played for the first time since 2004. -
Slammin’ McCann
ATLANTA (AP) — Brian McCann’s week of bases-loaded fun began with a big hit at the All-Star game and ended with a grand slam that helped the Atlanta Braves recover their home swagger.
McCann matched his career high with five RBIs, helping the Braves end a rare two-game home losing streak by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 11-6 on Sunday.
The Braves, who won the series opener before losing two straight to Milwaukee, improved baseball’s best home record to 32-12. -
Team of the Decade: Blazers honored by GSC after tremendous 10-year-period
Valdosta State’s football team was recently named the Gulf South Conference’s Team of the Decade for the years 2000-09.
The Blazers earned 103.5 out of a possible 116 points (89 percent) in the Team of the Decade voting. VSU easily out-distanced runner-up Delta State, which tallied 90 points (78 percent). North Alabama was third with 83 points (72 percent). -
Valdosta 5K road race coming Sunday
For the fifth year in a row, local runners will participate in a road race in Valdosta on Independence Day.
The Valdosta 5K will be held on Sunday, July 4.
The race will begin at 7 a.m. at BakerSmith Corners Shopping Center (3200 North Ashley Street), will travel south along Patterson Street and will end in front of the Talk 92.1 FM radio station in downtown Valdosta. -
Short-handed ’Cats go 1-1 in Diamond Brawl
VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Wildcats started the 2010 Diamond Brawl on Thursday by going 1-1, with a 4-1 win over Yulee and a 6-4 loss to Ware County.

Glaus at center of Braves’ resurgence
Jason Heyward’s bat has cooled off considerably.
Jair Jurrjens is still hurt. Chipper Jones might be on his way to retirement when the season ends.
Yet no matter how much difficulty the Atlanta Braves seem to face, they keep winning.
Since ending a nine-game losing streak on April 30, the Braves are 34-14, best in the major leagues, and their 42-28 overall record leads the NL.
