VALDOSTA —
Robinson G. (Bob) King Jr., passed away Nov. 5, 2012, at Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta, Ga. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 9, 1924, to the late Robinson G. King Sr. and Gladys Marie Minehart.
During WWII, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy and after receiving his wings he became a flight instructor at the young age of 20. Bob retired as a Commander after serving 28 years in the Navy Reserve. His passion for flying continued for more than 50 years. He logged 15,000 hours of flight time earning him the nickname “Sky King.” His family and friends considered it an honor to fly with such a skilled pilot.
After the war, he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in civil engineering. In 1964, after working in the construction industry for several years, he started his own general construction company King-Bole, Inc. in Des Moines. He retired in 1994, and with his wife, Nancy, moved to Anna Maria Island, Fla. Bob enjoyed flying, sailing, golfing, playing cards and traveling.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Nancy; two daughters, Angelyn King and Marilee Westergaard of Des Moines, Iowa; one son, Robinson (Pam) King III of Livermore, Maine; five stepchildren, Sue (Steve) Treanor, Pam (Rusty) Russell, Lynn (Cliff) Courtenay, all of Valdosta, Sandra (Russ) Smiltnieks, Memphis, Tenn., and David (Tami) Stroh, Des Moines, Iowa. He was also blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob was a member of the Order of Daedalians, the National Military Pilots Fraternity, Quiet Birdman, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was also a member of the Key Royale Golf Club and active in many organizations, including Master Builders of Iowa, Za-Ga-Zig Flying Fez, Gulf Coast Shrine Club, American Legion, Meals on Wheels, and Island Kiwanis Club.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Jane Priebe, his twin Alice Swanson; and his first wife, Marilee Petersen King.
