Martha Ann Sanders Hiers

VALDOSTA — Martha Ann Sanders Hiers, 85, of Valdosta, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2012. She was born on April 1, 1927, in Fitzgerald, Ga., to the late Bertie Roy and Alpha Lee Dekle Sanders and was a lifelong resident of this area. Mrs. Hiers was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church and retired from the Valdosta School System. She taught at Central Elementary School and math at Valdosta Junior High School. She was a member of the Holly Garden Club, Fellowship Sunday School Class, Bazaar Workshop, Eleven O’clocker Circle UMW, Red Hat Society and Pink Ladies. She volunteered at SGMC in the Gift Shop for many years. Mrs. Hiers loved playing bridge, planting and arranging flowers, playing the piano, sewing and crafts. She enjoyed cooking for her friends and family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her son, Terry Hiers (Cindee) of Valdosta and daughter, Debbie Moulton (Mark) of Macon; five grandchildren, Heather (Matt) Dorsey, Lindsey (Kevin) Moore of Valdosta, Wesley (Lauren) Moulton of Valdosta, Matthew Moulton of Spartanburg, S.C., Ashley Moulton of Macon; great-grandchildren, Jake Dorsey, Addyson Dorsey, and Payton Mercer of Valdosta; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Henry and Mary Hiers of Valdosta, and Helen Matthews of Jacksonville, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews, all who loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Laurie Smith “Shorty” Hiers; an infant son, Michael Scott Hiers; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bertie Roy Sanders; sister, Mary Sanders Harden; and brother, Wilmer Stewart.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at Park Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. V.L. Daughtrey and the Rev. Hale Bishop officiating. Private family interment services will be held immediately following the service in Lake Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home Saturday from 5-7 p.m.
