Nellie “Nelle” Kathryn Smith Rackley

VALDOSTA — Nellie “Nelle” Kathryn Smith Rackley, of Pelham, passed away at home on Monday, July 23, 2012, following a lengthy illness. She was born on Nov. 24, 1927, in Sale City, Ga., to the late Jesse Daniel and Hattie Lee Miller Smith.

In 1948, Nelle met Carswell Rackley on a blind date. Six weeks later, they were married, and the marriage happily lasted for almost 48 years until Mr. Rackley’s death in 1996.

Mrs. Rackley was a member of First Baptist Church of Pelham and was a long-time employee at Pelham Banking Company. While working at the bank for over 38 years, Nelle was well-known for providing outstanding customer service. She was appreciated by many people who relied on her to help them manage their accounts. On numerous occasions, she provided curbside service to those who were physically unable to go inside the bank. Mrs. Rackley was also known for going after work to the homes of elderly customers to help them with their banking needs.

Survivors include her son, Peter Rackley of Camilla; two daughters and a son-in-law, Pricilla Boren of Albany and Patti and Mark Goodson of Valdosta; grandchildren, Leslie and Lee Musgrove of Valdosta, Amanda Shiver and her fiancé Robert Woeller of Baconton, Beau and Melissa Boren of Macon, Rackley Boren and his fiancee Lorin Atkins of Austin, Texas and Tyler Goodson of Athens; great-grandchildren, Will Musgrove, Chase Musgrove, Jarrett Musgrove, Megan Corbett, Jordan Pollock, Anthony Hutto, Harley Boren, Jacob Boren, and  Abigail Boren; great-great-grandchild, Adisyn Corbett; sister, Laurie Harris of Pelham; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Irma Jean Smith of Pelham, Audrey Smith of Warner Robins.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Rackley was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Warner Ellis and Clyde Coleman Rackley; three brothers, George Smith, Robert Smith and Lawrence Smith; a sister, Betty Ruth Smith; a son-in-law, Bob Boren; and a grandson, Brad Boren.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, in the chapel of Jamerson-Braswell Funeral Home in Pelham with the Rev. Walter Flint officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
