Charlton Lee Davis Sr.

VALDOSTA — Charlton Lee Davis Sr., of Atlanta, and Highlands, N.C., died Monday, April 16, 2012, at Piedmont Hospital. Charlie was the third son and the fifth of eight children of Benjamin Franklin and Roberta Snyder Davis and was born Jan. 8, 1933, in Haywood County, N.C. He graduated from Waynesville High School in 1951, and joined the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, at Fort Seward during the Korean War.

He was educated on the GI Bill at Mars Hill College and the University of Richmond, graduating in 1960 with a BBA in accounting. He moved to Atlanta in 1960, and married his Mars Hill sweetheart, Patricia Curry, the same year. He began his professional career at the old Arthur Young and Company and for the next 35 years practiced as a CPA, forming his own accounting firm in Valdosta, Ga., in 1975. The firm, which bore his name, served much of the Valdosta area for over 20 years. In the late 1970s, he purchased the Credit Bureau of Valdosta and ran both businesses simultaneously.

In his 35 years of residence in Valdosta, he was a stalwart in the local civic landscape: a Paul Harris Fellow in Valdosta North Rotary, a Partner for the School of Business Administration at Valdosta State University, and a committed supporter of the Alapaha Council of the Boy Scouts of America, where he was a chairman of the board, a winner of the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth, and a James West Fellow. Charlie was an Eagle Scout as a youth in Waynesville and he believed that many of life’s important lessons were learned in Scouting.

In 1994, he and Pat purchased their home in Highlands and spent much of the year there as active residents. He was a talented birder and pursued his interests in nature through the Audubon Society. He was a board member of Audubon North Carolina from 2006 to 2010. He and his wife traveled to see birds and nature across the United States and Canada as well as in Europe and New Zealand.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia Curry Davis of Atlanta, Ga., and Highlands, N.C.; his sister, Mary Davis Lambert of Northfield, Vermont; son, Charlton Lee Davis Jr., of Atlanta; and his daughter, Holly Schmidt-Davis; his son-in-law, Jon Schmidt-Davis and his granddaughter and light of his life, Audrey Schmidt-Davis, age four, all of Decatur, Ga.

The family will celebrate his life with a private memorial service later this month.

Those wishing to remember him may do so with contributions to Audubon North Carolina at 400 Silver Cedar Court, Suite 420, Chapel Hill, NC, 27514, or the Alapaha Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, P.O. Box 1006, Valdosta, GA 31603. — H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill Chapel, Atlanta
