Jewel Mathis Swanson, of Valdosta, passed away at her home on her 85th birthday, Monday, January 28, 2013.
She was born January 28, 1928 in Howe, Oklahoma, a daughter of the late Atlas A. and Ada Levada Edwards Mathis. Mrs. Swanson was a member of Central Avenue Church of Christ.
She is survived by six sons, William A. and wife Shirley McCormick of Lindale, TX, Jimmie D. and wife Gail McCormick of Quinlan, TX, David L. Swanson of Los Angeles, CA, Robert E. Swanson of Cullman, AL, John P. Swanson of Nashville, TN, and Nathan Doyle and wife Caryn Swanson of Toccopola, MS; one daughter, Nancy J. Swanson of Valdosta; a daughter-in-law, Lila T. Swanson of Pontotoc, MS; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inez Mathis Maynor of Lake Charles, LA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Powell Swanson; a son, Paul A. Swanson; three sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, in the Chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Bryan Jarvis and Mr. John Klimko officiating. Interment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Water Valley, MS. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the funeral service.
