Dr. Julian Hutchinson “Jake” Atkinson, 88, widower of Estelle Duke Atkinson, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Dr. Atkinson, recently of Florida, was born July 14, 1924, in Green County, Ga., a son of the late Frederick William and Mary Lou Hutchinson Atkinson. He went to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. as a graduate student in February 1951, became an AgEcon Professor, and was associated with the University until his retirement.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia (Charlie) Atkinson, of Mesa, Ariz. and Cynthia Atkinson (Brian Forrer), of Solvang, Calif.; a son Thomas (Malu) Atkinson, of Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren, Estelle and Susan Atkinson; and a brother Frederick (Dottie) Atkinson, of Valdosta.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., today, Feb. 9, 2013, in Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree, S.C., with burial in the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church Cemetery near Greeleyville, S.C. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. today at Grace Hall at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.
