Sally Akins Sheffield

Funeral services for Sally Akins Sheffield, 84, of Cairo, Ga., will be held at  2:30 p.m., First Baptist Church, Cairo, Ga.  Dr. Joe Allen and Dr. Ron McCaskill will officiate. Mrs. Sheffield passed away at her home in Cairo on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.

Interment services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m., prior to the funeral service in Pleasant Cemetery, Nashville, Ga.

Sally was born on Feb. 25, 1928, in Nashville, Ga., to the late John S. and Evie Carter Akins. On Aug. 20, 1950, she married James Horace Sheffield. Mr. Sheffield preceded her in death on October 16, 1993.  

A graduate of Nashville High School, she attended ABAC, and graduated from the University of Georgia.  Love for all God’s children gave Sally her calling in life.  She taught public schools in Winter Haven, Florida, Houston, Texas, Damascus, Georgia, and Cairo where she taught for 38 years before retiring.  After retirement, she substituted for another 10 years in the Grady County school system.

She was a very active member of First Baptist Church, Cairo, Ga., the Retired Teachers Association, and Cairo Woman’s Club.

Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law; James H. Sheffield, Jr. (Claire) of Roswell, Ga.; daughters, Lana Sheffield Ball and Susan Sheffield, both of Atlanta; grandchildren, Lamar Q. Ball, IV of Nashville, John S. Ball of Atlanta, Sam (Sarah) Ball of Madison, Ga., James H. Sheffield III and Joseph W. Sheffield both of  Roswell; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Akins and Lucy Akins, both of Nashville, and Kathleen Cook of Colquitt; and a brother-in-law; Herman Sheffield of Colquitt.

The family will receive friends in the Cairo First Baptist Fellowship Hall on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, from 5-7 p.m.
