Joseph H. Baum

- — Joseph H. Baum, PhD, 84, husband of Susan Harding, MD died Tuesday July 3, 2012 at Brooks County Hospital.

He was born in Chicago, Ill. to Herman and Esther Baum, on September 9, 1927. He grew up in Chicago where he was involved with Scouting and became an Eagle Scout in 1945; he entered the U.S. Army and served both in Germany and in the United States. He later served in the Army Reserve, eventually retiring as a Colonel. After WWII, he continued his education, earning a PhD from Northwestern University in Chicago. He taught Pathology, initially at Northwestern University Medical School, then at Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia, Pa. The last two years before he retired, he was the Acting Dean of Temple Medical School. He was a brilliant teacher, earning the prestigious Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Golden Apple Award of American Medical Schools. He moved to Quitman when he retired in 1990, and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Harding, MD, a physician in Quitman; step-children Arthur Morin, Stephanie Smith, and Mac Promish, all of Quitman; a daughter-in-law, Julie Cyrille, of Roanne, France; four grandchildren in Huntington Valley, Pa.: Patrick, Iain, Margaret, and Ronan; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Rosalie Baum and Dorothy and Robert Hernquist of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents, his second wife, Mireille Baum and his oldest stepson, Eric Morin.

The family will receive friends Friday, July 6 at 6 p.m. at Maxwell-Miller Funeral Home in Quitman.

In lieu of flowers,  please consider donations to either the Humane Society or to the Republican Party, in honor of Joseph Baum’s lifelong interest in animals and his love of his country.
