VALDOSTA —
One month after celebrating her 94th birthday, Mittie Lane McCorvey departed this life for an eternity of joy and celebration with her Creator and Savior. Born Sept. 28, 1918 in Lake City, Fla., to Ralph Benjamin Lane and Ethel Zeigler Lane, Mittie Lou, as she was called by her parents and friends, was the eldest of their five children. Two sisters, Mary Remmie Lane McCall, Lake Park, Ga., and Helen Lane Elder of Sebring, Fla., survive from her original family.
Mittie Lou McCorvey taught in Georgia public schools in the Hobby School (rural Turner County), Warwick, Sylvester, Irwinville, Sycamore, and Lake Park, for more than 30 years before her retirement in 1982. She viewed teaching as a calling from God, and she humbly yet proudly would say she was a teacher, not an educator. During her career, her efforts positively affected the lives of countless South Georgia children, long since grown into adulthood.
A Christian since early in her life, Mrs. McCorvey went quietly about providing a Godly example for her family and friends, making the world a better place for all with whom she came into contact and leaving a legacy of love and dedication to God, family, and country. She remained active in the Retired Teachers organization in Lowndes and Tift Counties and the United Methodist Women at Lake Park Methodist Church and Tifton First United Methodist Church for as long as her health allowed. A charter member and founder of the Lake Park Historical Society as well as the planning committee of the Lake Park Centennial, Mittie Lou valued the heritage of the United States and particularly her south Georgia childhood home.
Mrs. McCorvey is survived by her three children and their spouses, June King (Wilton) of Rochelle; Gary McCorvey (Betty) of Chula; and Deborah Gleaton (Jack) of Leesburg; as well as four grandchildren, Kyle King (Susan) of Hampton; Martiele McCorvey Pickle of Bainbridge, and Jackson and Benjamin Gleaton of Leesburg; and five great-grandchildren: Elizabeth and Thomas King and Mackenzie, Shelton, and Mallory Pickle.
The family will receive friends at McLane Lakewood Funeral Services, 3119 West Marion Avenue, U.S. Highway 41, Lake Park, GA 31636, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, with services to begin at that location at 1:30 p.m. with interment in Lake Park Cemetery immediately thereafter, beside the resting place of her beloved brother Ralph Benjamin Lane, Jr., who gave his life serving the United States in World War II.
The family requests that NO FLOWERS be sent, but donations may be made in Mittie Lane McCorvey’s memory to Coastal Plain CASA (P.O. Box 2587), Patticake House (P.O. Drawer 1169), and Ruth’s Cottage (P.O. Box 2727), all located in Tifton, Georgia 31793 and all of which serve the children and mothers of Irwin, Tift, Turner, and Worth Counties. — McLane Funeral Services of Lake Park and Lowe’s Funeral Home of Helena has charge of the arrangements.
