VALDOSTA —
Fred B. Witherington Jr., son of Fred B. and Clarice Chitty Witherington, died Sunday, the 4th of November, 2012 at his home in Smyrna, Ga. He was 86 years old. He had been in declining health since May. Mr. Witherington was born and raised in Valdosta, Ga. He received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Chicago and his Master’s degree from the University of Florida. He was employed with The Georgia Power Company for 48 years, retiring as District Manager in Carrollton, Ga.
During the 1980s, Mr. Witherington served as the Chairman of the Board of Tanner Medical Center where he worked diligently to bring new physicians to the area and make significant improvements in the standard of patient care. Mr. Witherington was a veteran of World War II, serving in Italy and other parts of Europe as a waist gunner on a B-17 in the Army Air Corps. For the rest of his life, he was a patriotic supporter of all branches of the military, working tirelessly to help veterans of all wars. He believed in and loved the America he fought so hard for, holding close to his heart the principles and rights that make America great.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bea Roby Witherington; daughter, Bonni W. Fields and spouse Gary Fields, also of Smyrna; daughter, Sandra W. Magin and spouse Patricia Lollis, both of El Cerrito, Calif.; Francis W. Brown and spouse James, of Valdosta; brother-in-law, Milton L. Roby and spouse Mary, of Jackson, Miss.
Mr. Witherington was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Clora W. Guest of Valdosta; and in-laws, Perry R. and Catherine Dula Roby of Raleigh-Durham, N.C., formerly of Durant, Miss.
All who knew him will remember his wonderful smile, affability, and dedication to community and family.
Graveside services will be conducted on Thursday, the 8th of November at 2 p.m. at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt. Vernon Highway, NW, Sandy Springs.
