VALDOSTA —
Dr. Robert W. Wilson, 84, of Valdosta, died on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born in Valdosta on May 31, 1928, to the late Frank C. and Eleanor Smith Wilson. He graduated from Valdosta High School and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After honorably serving his country, he attended South Georgia College in Douglas to prepare himself for Optometry School. He entered Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1949, and graduated with a Doctor of Optometry Degree in June of 1952. While he attended Northern Illinois, he was the president of the Southern Club and served as the scribe for PTU Professional Fraternity. He practiced with his father in Valdosta and Colquitt and later had practices in Adel, Atlanta, Albany and Valdosta. Dr. Wilson was recognized by his peers and the industry by being named Optometrist of the Year in 1958. He was past Potentate of the Hassan Shrine Temple, a York Rite and Scottish Rite Mason, member of Azalea Lodge, past Commander of the VFW post in Adel and was an active member of VFW Valdosta Post 1777, American Legion Valdosta Post No. 13, Elks Club and Lions Club. He loved to fish and was also an avid Georgia Bulldog fan. GO DAWGS!! Dr. Wilson was a member of 1st Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice and George Scruggs of Valdosta and Debra Wilson of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Jason and Cathy Clements of Atlanta and Kyle Berry of Long Island, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, Dylan Rose Clements of Atlanta, Ian Berry of Long Island, N.Y., and Sebastian Berry, also of Long Island, N.Y.; one sister, Grace Slade of West Point, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lee Wilson; and two sisters, Elizabeth Gibson and Frances Johnson. The family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice of South Georgia and HomeInStead for their compassion and steadfast care of Dr. Wilson.
Service for Dr. Robert W. Wilson will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 , 2012, in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in the McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Hospice of South Georgia or Hasan Transportation Fund which helps defray the cost of transporting children to the Shriner’s Hospital.
