The Rev. R. V. Williams, 88, of Adel, Ga., passed away Friday Nov. 9, 2012 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born in Treutlen County, Ga., to Soloman Wayne & Mattie Pearl Page Williams on Feb. 14, 1924. was a retired minister. He was also a retired principal and Teacher in Twigs, Colquitt, and Cook counties for 40 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Leila United Methodist Church.
Richard Vernon Williams graduated from Doerun High School, in Doerun, Ga. He served in the army as a private first class and an M.P. in Brady, Texas and Hawaii. He graduated from Norman College in Norman Park, Ga. with an associate’s degree and earned his bachelor’s at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Ga. He earned his master’s degree in school administration at Florida State University. He later graduated from Emory University with a doctorate. He was ordained a deacon in the United Methodist Church in 1969 in Valdosta, Ga. Bishop Smith ordained him at Valdosta First United Methodist Church (UMC). He taught both 6th and 7th grades and drove a school bus in Colquitt County. He was a United Methodist Minister in the Valdosta district for 38 years. He was pastor of Salem UMC for seven years, Shiloh UMC for three years, Chula-Harding UMC for four years, Leila-Weeks UMC for nine years, Evelyen UMC for five years, Pine Level UMC for a year and Kelly UMC for ten years. He lived in Norman Park, Jeffersonville, Statesboro, Hartsfield, Berlin, Sparks and Lenox, Ga. He lived in Adel from 1986 until present. He moved to Colquitt County in 1936, he moved to Cook County in June of 1963 and was principal of Sparks and Lenox for seven years (June 1963-70). He was a principal in Lenox between 1963 and 1986. He retired in June of 1986.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Sue G. Williams; brothers, Bill Williams, Albra Williams, Walter Gilby Williams, Eschol Russell Williams, Julian Willard Williams; and sisters, L. Johnson and Marion Williams.
Survivors include, son, the Rev. O. Ken (Mary Ann Sutton) Williams of Adel; brothers, Bronson Williams of Quitman, Paul Williams of Stone Mountain, Frank Williams of Brunswick; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held at Leila United Methodist Church at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012. The Revs. Kenneth Matthews, Farrell Harper, Dan Robinson and V. L. Daughtry will officiate. Interment to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quitman. Visitation will be held between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday at Purvis Funeral Home in Adel and between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday at Leila United Methodist Church prior to service.
